The third annual State of Africatown will be held on January 15 at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute and will feature presentations on the accomplishments of the last year as well as vision, opportunities and challenges facing our community in 2016.

2015 was a productive year for Central District based Africatown Seattle initiatives ending with and Human Rights Award followed by the signing of legislation formally designating the Central Area as an Arts & Cultural District focused honoring, preserving and developing the Black and African Diaspora contributions to Seattle.

Last week, Missouri students and football team showed the power of unity and strategic economic action. A month ago millions responded to the call of #JusticeOrElse in Washington DC and communities across the country are getting ready for the second year of Black Friday Boycotts to make the statement that #BlackLivesMatter.

Owour Arunga will focus on our continued struggle for social and economic empowerment in the Black community as a highlight the first Annual Africatown Winter Arts & Soul Fest. In partnership with Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, Arunga Music, Taste of Caribbean/Red Lounge, and Lake Chad Cafe the four days of festivities will highlight the neighborhood’s unique African American heritage and African diaspora flavors while promoting community businesses throughout the holiday season kicking off with Shop Small and Small Business Saturday. A Former Black FBI Agent Speaks About Martin, Malcolm, Music And More

n 1975, Darthard Perry, a former FBI agent, went on record and explained the lengths that the government goes to examine and study African American culture. The man, a self-proclaimed “infiltrator,” speaks – seemingly with pride – on how he helped tear down Black organizations and how the culture was flipped back on the people. “You can take their culture and use it against them,” he says in the video. The video is marveling to watch, albeit disgusting. The agent was interviewed by the legendary journalist Gil Nobel (RIP).

China in driving seat as Ethiopian capital gets new tramway

Addis Ababa (AFP) – Sub-Saharan Africa’s first modern tramway opened in the Ethiopian capital on Sunday, marking the completion of a massive Chinese-funded infrastructure project hailed as a major step in the country’s economic development.

Even before the ribbon was cut, several hundred residents were queueing for a ride on the Chinese-driven trams, which have the capacity to carry 60,000 passengers a day across the capital of Africa’s second most populous nation.
The two line, 34-kilometre (21 mile) system was built by the China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) . The project cost $475 million, 85 percent of which has been covered by China’s Exim bank.

Mugabe: Whites Can’t Own Land in Zimbabwe

Robert Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe as a Marxist dictator since the country became independent from Britain in 1980, is telling his country’s few remaining white landowners: Your time is up.

“We say no to whites owning our land, and they should go,” Mugabe told supporters, according to The Christian Science Monitor. “They can own companies and apartments…but not the soil. It is ours and that message should ring loud and clear in Britain and the United States.”
