Black Lives Matter groups receive human rights awards at Town Hall

Black Lives Matter was the theme for this year’s Annual Human Rights Day Celebration in Seattle and two Central Area organizations particularly active in the movement were recognized Thursday night for their work.
Youth Undoing Institutional Racism received the Rising Human Rights Leaders award for its role in the campaign to stop the new youth jail slated to replace the aging facility at 12th and Alder. The Africatown Innovation Center also received an honorary award. The organization was founded by Central District activist Wyking Garrett, who runs the Umoja P.E.A.C.E. Center at 23rd and Spring.
