Juneteenth is a reminder of the resilience and strength of our communities and that, in the face of oppression and injustice, we continue to press into our collective brilliance and strength. We recognize this day, just as others that tend to receive temporary limelight in this country, as one that gives us focused opportunity to contemplate how we may continue to honor the contributions and sacrifices of our ancestors. We honor their tireless fight for freedom and are grateful for the paths they have paved that have allowed for the progress we have made today. We are thankful for these sacrifices and contributions each and every day.

STATE OF AFRICATOWN 2023: Celebrating a Decade of Realizing the Vision of Black Seattle

For a decade now, State of Africatown has provided opportunity to community members, media and grass-roots change makers to hear from a broad spectrum of presenters in the company of over 250 community stakeholders – all coming together each year with one common goal in mind: continuing to build upon the inceptive vision of those who laid the foundation for this yearly gathering and for those who will continue to lay groundwork for generations to come.

This year will offer an opportunity for fresh perspective as we approach new ways to build thriving communities within Seattle’s Black diaspora.

Presentations from key community stakeholders and on-the-ground organizations will give you a ‘behind the curtain’ peek at the many ways the community has and will continue to shift narratives to effectively impact and shape the landscape of Seattle city centers and beyond.

HISTORY OF STATE OF AFRICATOWN

Collaboratively founded by the Honorable Dawn Mason and K. Wyking Garrett, The African American & African Diaspora Gathering: State of Africatown, began as a listening session for elected officials and policymakers to hear innovators and leaders share their strategic ideas for Seattle’s Black community. While that goal is still the center of why the SOA exists, each year affords us an additional opportunity to reflect on community values and how we may continue to realize the vision.

Here’s a look at last year’s virtual State of Africatown event.

With vision for ‘African American communities and spaces of the future,’ Africatown Plaza will be next to take shape in the Central District

Community members met this week for an all-day design symposium at Washington Hall in the Central District to plan “African American communities and spaces of the future” around the Puget Sound.

The event follows a major development in the Central District with the opening of the Liberty Bank Building and comes as the early design process for Africatown Plaza at Midtown, another fully affordable development around the 23rd and Union core, is about to begin.

“Overall, working to make sure that we still have a heart and soul and a place of unity and community,” the Africatown Community Land Trust’s K. Wyking Garrett said Saturday, before giving a shout out to last weekend’s Umoja Fest Parade, a Central Area staple since the 1940s. He wants Africatown, however, to be more than just these major celebrations, but places “where we can experience Black culture, Black music, Black culinary genius from throughout the diaspora.”

The Liberty Bank Building

At 24th and Union, the Capitol Hill Housing-led Liberty Bank Building now provides more than 100 affordable homes after opening this spring. Africatown hopes the new building can be a springboard for more equitable development in a neighborhood that has seen increased gentrification and felt the effects of mass incarceration in recent years.

Next will come Africatown Plaza at Midtown on the southern end of the Midtown Center block. Being planned as 130 units of 100% affordable housing plus street-level retail and commercial space, the project will be built at 23rd and Spring, just down from the Liberty Bank Building on the south end of the site of the former Midtown Plaza. It will include around 130 affordable housing units, specifically for “those who have been displaced due to rising rents,” as well as several thousand square feet of retail space, as previously reported by CHS.
